Queen Elizabeth I
Portrait by an unknown artist in the Long Gallery, Hardwick Hall. One of the so-called ‘Armada ’portraits from after 1588. The Queen stands on a carpet of unusual design. Her petticoat is embroidered with nautical subjects, a reference to the naval victory over Spain. The portrait was probably the Queen's gift, brought to Hardwick from London in 1599.
